SVNS Rugby Preparation

The Dubai Sevens is a flagship event in the world of rugby sevens, a fast-paced, high-scoring format of rugby union that features seven players per team and shorter matches of just 14 minutes. Kicking off the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series, the Dubai Sevens pulls in fans and teams from all over, setting the tone for a globe-trotting rugby party like no other.

The HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series

The HSBC Rugby Sevens, launched in 1999, is a premier rugby event featuring fast-paced matches and global fanfare. Teams compete across various iconic cities to crown men’s and women’s champions.

The 2023–24 series, its 25th edition, spanned eight events from December 2023 to June 2024, concluding with a Grand Final in Spain. France claimed the men’s title, and Australia won the women’s championship. The series saw strong attendance and viewership, adding to rugby sevens’ growing popularity worldwide.

The Dubai Sevens

The 2024–25 HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series spans six iconic cities, beginning with the Dubai Sevens from 29 November to 1 December 2024. The series then travels to Cape Town, Perth, Vancouver, Hong Kong, and Singapore, culminating in Los Angeles on 3–4 May 2025 with the SVNS World Championship.

The Dubai Sevens takes place at The Sevens Stadium, a purpose-built venue near the city. With eight pitches, it hosts both large-scale events and social or amateur competitions, creating a vibrant rugby festival for all levels of players.

With Dubai’s desert heat still packing a punch in December, matches wisely kick off in the cooler late afternoons and evenings. Players get the best conditions, fans avoid melting, and who doesn’t enjoy a floodlit game?

Fans and Atmosphere

The Dubai Sevens isn’t just a rugby tournament—it’s a proper party with a side of sport. Fans from traditional rugby nations such as England, France, South Africa, and New Zealand flood in alongside Dubai’s thriving expatriate population, waving flags, rocking ridiculous costumes, and turning the stands into a carnival.

When you’re not cheering (or losing your voice), there’s live music, food stalls, and family-friendly zones to explore. This year, Stormzy and the Sugababes are taking the stage, so there’s no excuse to get involved in this year’s festival-themed fancy dress.

Looking Ahead

The Dubai Sevens kicks off the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series with its unique mix of high-octane rugby, a popping atmosphere, and world-class entertainment. It’s more than rugby; it’s a party oasis in the desert where culture, music, and sports fans are flocking to.
